Shahid Afridi continues to talk about the Kashmir issue
Afridi has continued to post about the Kashmir issue despite the backlash.
The cricketing ties between India and Pakistan have been severed for a long time now. The political tension between the two countries is at an all-time high which has not helped the cause either. Team India visited Pakistan last time in 2005-06 for a full series while the Men in Green were in the neighbouring country for a short series in 2012-13 where they played 3 ODIs and 2 T20Is.
The two teams have faced each other in the ICC tournaments but India has continuously avoided any bilateral association with Pakistan. The ongoing Kashmir issue has been the root of all the tension between the two countries. Former Pakistani skipper Shahid Afridi took to Twitter to show his anger towards the Indian government and alleged them for human right violations and called Kashmir as “Indian Occupied Kashmir”.
However, the tweet didn’t go down well with the Indians and Afridi was trolled massively on the social media.
Afridi’s Tweet:
Joining the bandwagon Gautam Gambhir who has been known for his hard-hitting and direct responses hit back at the former Pakistani all-rounder on Twitter and termed him “Under 19”. Notably, Gambhir has been one of the Indian players who hasn’t shied away from responding the Pakistanis on the field as well as off it.
He tagged Afridi in his post and said that the media should relax as he is celebrating a dismissal off a no-ball.
Gambhir’s Tweet:
Shahid Afridi after getting trolled posted another tweet with the image from the Ice Cricket game where he posed with an Indian fan. Interestingly, the picture went viral and the batsman was lauded for his spirit. In his tweet, he wrote that as a sportsman he respects everyone but wants similar respect for the innocent Kashmiris and their human rights.
His Tweet:
Context of the matter
The Kashmir region is disputed between the two countries and both claim their ownership over it. It is the same reason the two countries have been at war multiple times, there is cross-border firing despite a cease-fire pact and there have been infiltrations into India from the other side triggering disbalance in the valley. There is a Line of Control that divides Kashmir into two parts, with an Indian government on one side and Pakistani on the other.
