Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi will take part in an event organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board to acknowledge the all-rounder for his contribution to Pakistan cricket. He, along with Younis Khan and Misbah Ul Haq who both recently retired in May, will be present at the ceremony to be held on September 14 in Lahore.

Afridi takes time out to attend the ceremony

The 37-year old, who will be busy playing the Afghan Cricket League which kicks off on September 11, initially refused to the invitation but later changed his mind. All three former captains will be awarded prizes during the event. Afridi last played for Pakistan during the World T20 in 2016 before announcing his retirement from international cricket. The maverick cricketer continues to be a hot property in various T20 leagues going around the world. He is currently playing in the NatWest Blast T20 in England where he also slammed his first T20 century while opening the innings for Hampshire.

Pakistan fans are agog to learn about the World Series which is scheduled to kick off in mid-September. Since the attack on the team bus of Sri Lanka in March 2009, international cricket stalled in the cricket crazy country. Zimbabwe toured Pakistan for a limited overs series in 2015 but no other country followed suit. The World Series will be a stepping stone for the return of cricket to Pakistan.

Misbah, Younis deserve the adulation

Misbah and Younis, less celebrated than Afridi, made a big impact in Pakistan cricket, especially in Test cricket. While Afridi was an entertainer, Misbah and Younis were work horses who lifted Pakistan from the shambles during the spot-fixing saga in 2010. Going by the statistics, Younis is by far the most successful batsman from Pakistan, scoring 10,099 runs at 52.05 and 34 centuries – both Pakistan records by a fair distance. Misbah, on the other hand, is the most successful captain in the history of Pakistan cricket.
