Sarfraz Ahmed, the Pakistan skipper, has been a recipient of severe criticism after Pakistan’s abysmal performance in the 2018 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He turned out with some decisions, which furrowed many eyebrows. His performance with the willow was also dismal having scored only 68 runs from five matches with a top score of 44 against India.

Despite the poor show, the 31-year-old has got support from chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq. The World Cup is scheduled to take place from May 30 next year in England and Wales and former Pakistani all-round cricketer Shahid Afridi didn’t mince any words in saying that Sarfraz should be made the captain for the event on an immediate basis.

I’m confident that Sarfraz would handle the team well

There’s no need to change the captaincy for the time being. Sarfraz is shouldering the team very efficiently. I can’t understand why the captain gets blamed in the end. The management should immediately announce Sarfraz as the captain and persist with him till the World Cup,” Afridi was quoted as saying during an event in Pakistan.

Afridi also mentioned that Sarfraz and coach Mickey Arthur are on the same page and removing Sarfraz as the captain solely on the basis of the Asia Cup performance would be unfair on the Karachi-born wicketkeeper-batsman.

“I’m confident that Sarfraz would handle the team well. He and coach (Mickey) are on the same page and if only the Asia Cup performance leads to his ouster, then I feel it’s unfair,” he added.

Pakistan started their campaign with a victory against Hong Kong. But they lost to Rohit Sharma’s Men in Blue as many as twice. Albeit they won against Afghanistan, Sarfraz’s team slumped against Bangladesh in their last Super 4 match to bow out before the final on 28th.
