The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the better places in the world for the visitors. The country has a lot to offer from the tourist point of view and with a lot of India and Pakistan citizens living there the people also have a special liking for cricket. It has been the home venue of the Pakistan cricket team for a while now. Also, there were Indian Premier League (IPL) matches hosted at the venue earlier in 2014.
The country successfully hosted the Asia Cup 2018, the biggest cricketing event in Asia. Furthermore, the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) is being played in the UAE at the moment. The crowd turn up is great and there are fans from various different countries living in UAE. Hence, former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi wants the ICC to host major events like the World T20 in the country.
The venues in UAE are ideal for T20 cricket, says Afridi
Afridi opined that the venues in the country like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are great. He said that they are ideal for T20 cricket.
“It will be a great initiative to bring the Twenty20 World Cup here because expatriates from all countries are here and they can get to watch it. The venues here such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have proved to be ideal for T20 cricket. The T20 World Cup is a big event and ICC should think about staging it here,” Shahid Afridi said while talking to Gulf News.
Also, Afridi added that the upcoming UAE T20x tournament will provide a great opportunity for the local talent. He supported the shorter formats of the game and said that cricket is meant to entertain people.
“More people are taking interest in formats like T20 and T10. They are good formats for entertainment and cricket is meant to entertain the people. Today all are enjoying the short formats. UAE T20x will be another opportunity for all the players taking part in it, especially the local talent in UAE,” he stated.
Afridi is currently playing the Afghanistan Premier League and is representing the Paktia Panthers.
