Shai Hope has got the potential to be great: Stuart Law
"He’s a tough cookie. He’s pretty good now, but he’s got the potential to go great," Law remarked.
It was not very long ago when the critics were pulling down the current Windies side as the worst they have had in years. But now, with Windies leveling the series against England 1-1, the mouths have definitely been shut. It all happened due to the herculean efforts of the new found hero of the team – Shai Hope.
Team West Indies head coach, Stuart Law, recalled the conversation he had with Shai Hope on the final day of the second Test. He remarked how he was planning defense tactics but Shai had the hopes of registering a win. Twin tons from the young batsman saw the Windies register a thumping win in the match.
”He’s a rock, isn’t he? He looked at me and I said ‘What’s wrong with that?’,” said Law. “He looked at me (again), shook his head and shrugged his shoulders — and I said ‘OK, what’s your plan?’…’We’re going to win’ (he said). That’s God’s honest truth… (and) he went out and won the game,” recalled Stuart Law as per the quotes in AFP.
On Shai Hope becoming a modern day great
Talking further about Shai Hope, the Windies coach remarked that he could be the next big thing in the Caribbean cricket. Law noted that albeit the results have not been in their favor in the recent past, the players have always had immense confidence in their abilities. Their recent win has only strengthened things for them.
“I think the fact he wasn’t over the top in his celebrations just means he’s hungry, he’s driven. He doesn’t want to stop where he’s at now, he wants to keep going. I think that’s a great sign. He’s a tough cookie. He’s pretty good now, but he’s got the potential to go great,” Law remarked.
“I’ve seen these guys at close quarters — I’ve talked to them. Just the responses they give you, there’s immense confidence there. There’s probably a couple that doubted their ability to cope at this level but I hope those doubts are now well and truly put to bed and they can start flourishing,” he conceded further.
