All is not well in Bangladesh cricket at the moment. A few days after the players’ strike was called the BCB President Nazmul Hassan reckons that Shakib Al Hasan are some other players might skip the upcoming India tour. A lot has been going on behind the scenes between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Shakib. The latter has even not attended the team’s training sessions for two out of three days so far.
The BCB didn’t have any explanation for his absence. Moreover, they conveyed the message to the head coach Russell Domingo that the southpaw had been left out of the Sunday’s practice match played between Bangladesh Red and Bangladesh Green. The players selected for the tour took part in the match ahead of the India tour. However, contrary to BCB’s message, Shakib’s name was reportedly in the list of players expected to take part in the match.
Unfortunately, that is not all. In an interview to Bengal Daily Prothom Alo, Nazmul Hassan has indicated that Shakib Al Hasan, along with some other players, might miss India tour. Bangladesh are scheduled to leave for India on Wednesday (October 30) and play the first T20I of the three-match series on Sunday in Delhi. Hassan also informed that he has called the Bangladesh Test and T20I skipper for a discussion and hopes to take forward the matter from there.
Where will I get the captain from? Nazmul about Shakib Al Hasan’s possible absence
“I am quite sure that they [the players] won’t go, and they will only inform us when we have nothing to do about it. I don’t know. I have called Shakib today. Let’s see what he says. It might be others too. I don’t know. But I had information that they won’t go,” the BCB chief said.
Nazmul Hassan is also worried about appointing a new captain only two-three days before the tour if Shakib Al Hasan and some more players decide not to travel India. “Now things have quickly changed [vis-a-vis the strike]. They didn’t think it would all change so quickly. I am not saying this after hearing it from a trusted source.
“If they say on October 30 that they won’t go, what will we do? We have to change the entire combination. Where will I get a captain from? You tell me what will I do with them?” he further added. To make things worse, the BCB also sent a show-cause notice to Shakib Al Hasan last week deeming his deal with the telecom company ‘Grameenphone’ ‘unlawful’.
As far as Shakib attending the final training session in Mirpur is concerned, more update is expected to come later on Monday. The Bangladesh squad picked for the India tour is scheduled to play another practice match in the evening and it remains to be seen if Shakib will be around for that.
