Star Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan continues to struggle with his finger injury, putting his team under a lot of concern ahead of the ICC World Cup starting in May. The 31-year-old ace all-rounder was ruled out of Bangladesh’s ongoing tour of New Zealand and he recently returned home for treatment. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) authorities said his future will be determined by X-ray examination. The condition of his finger had worsened during the Asia Cup a few months ago as well and he was forced to exit the tournament midway.
The BCB is careful with regards to Shakib’s recovery ahead of the WC for Bangladesh’s success in the tournament will be depending on him. BCB president Nazmul Hasan has even said that the cricketer will obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) only if he is fully fit.
Shakib plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and it is his second franchise after Kolkata Knight Riders. Both the teams will play their first match against each other in Kolkata in the upcoming edition on March 24, which is also the cricketer’s birthday. While the Bangladeshi has been grappling with injuries, he picked the latest injury in his finger during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) held earlier this year.
Bangladesh Test skipper had to miss the first Test against New Zealand in Hamilton and is uncertain to play the remaining two games as well.
“If he is not fully OK then how will he play the IPL? It can’t be that he is only unfit for our national team but fit for the IPL. If he is fully OK and the doctors concur only then he will be able to play in the IPL,” Hasan was quoted as saying by CricketNext.
Not taking risk with Shakib
“We want him to play in both IPL and for the national team so the whole thing depends on his health. If he has a problem then we want him to recover fully before returning to cricket. We don’t want to take any risks with him.”
Hasan said Shakib underwent finger tests on Sunday and was advised rest for a week more which means he will miss the second Test in Wellington starting March 7. Hasan said the all-rounder was eager to take part in the third Test in Christchurch starting March 16 but with the WC not too far away, the management was wary about his injury.
