It is fair to say that the past ten days have been abysmal for Bangladesh cricket. From the players going on a strike following their tussle with their cricket to now their ace all-rounder, Shakib Al Hasan getting slapped with a two-year-ban, it can’t get any worse for the cricket-mad nation.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) slapped the No.1 ranked all-rounder in the world with a suspension of two years. The ban has been meted out after he received an offer from a bookie for match-fixing as many as on three occasions, which he failed to report to the apex body’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU). However, the suspension is backdated and Shakib can resume playing cricket after October 29, 2020, provided he satisfies the conditions in respect of the suspended part of the sanction.

Shakib Al Hasan relinquishes his MCC membership

So, in the wake of the prevailing situation, the fallen hero- Shakib- has decided to step down from Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) Cricket Committee. The MCC World Cricket committee is an independent body that boasts of current and former international cricketers and umpires from across the globe who meet twice on a yearly basis to discuss the prevalent issues in the game.

Commenting on the development, Mike Gatting, Chairman of the World Cricket committee said as quoted by Hindustan Times; “We are sorry to lose Shakib from the committee, where he has made a great contribution over the last couple of years. As guardians of the Spirit of Cricket, we support his resignation and believe this was the right decision.”

Vows to work closely with the ACSU

Following the ban from the ICC, Shakib expressed his disappointment but he also alluded that he will closely work with the Anti-Corruption unit to ensure that young kids do not make the same mistake as he did.

“I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches. The ICC ACU is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn’t do my duty in this instance”.

“Like the majority of players and fans around the world, I want cricket to be a corruption-free sport and I am looking forward to working with the ICC ACU team to support their education program and ensure young players don’t make the same mistake I did,” he added.
