Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has suffered a minor injury on his left leg due to which he is not a part of the currently underway conditioning camp of the Bangladesh team which began in Dhaka on July 10. The mission of the camp is to prepare the team ahead of their crucial fixtures against South Africa and Australia. The Australian team will be visiting Bangladesh next month to play two Test matches. Later, the Tigers will tour South Africa in the last week of September for a full series.

However, reports suggested that Shakib’s injury is a minor one and not one to worry about. He may miss a few days of the camp but would be back by July 22. It has also been reported that Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha will return on July 28, after which the camp will get underway with force. The Tigers are scheduled to play three two-day intra-squad games in August, for which Shakib in all probability will be available.

Although the all-rounder’s injury has deterred him from hitting the gym, team trainer Mario Villavarayan has confirmed that Shakib will resume training in a few days and reportedly, he will also start cycling from Tuesday. The veteran has, over the years, proved his mettle in all formats of the game and is one of the most experienced players in the Bangladesh squad along with the skipper Mashrafe Mortaza.

Shakib’s experience crucial to the team

In the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2017, Shakib’s 114 off 115 balls against New Zealand in a knockout game took Bangladesh to the semi-finals where they eventually lost to India. Also, his experience of playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League has time and again proved crucial for the Tigers. Shakib’s performances will be important when Bangladesh face off Australia and South Africa later in the season.
