At a time where all major cricketing action has been halted by the coronavirus pandemic, majority of cricketers are spending their quarantine time while interacting with their fans. Twitter Question & Answer sessions or Instagram live have been the major source of entertainment for cricket fanatics who are eagerly waiting for players to step back on the field.
Meanwhile, joining the social media trend, Australian legend took to Instagram live to name his all-time Australia ODI XI. Warne hosted an Instagram live session to reveal the side consisting of players with whom he has played during his career. The leg-spinner chose Allan Border as the skipper of the side.
Warne, who was an integral part of Australia’s squad in all formats, opted to go with Mark Waugh and Adam Gilchrist the two openers of the side. For the No.3 position, Warne chose one of the most successful skippers in the world– Ricky Ponting. Australian side reached new heights when Ponting was at the helm in limited-overs cricket.
Further, Warne picked Dean Jones, Michael Clarke, Michael Bevan and Andrew Symonds to fill the middle-order of the side.
Warne considers Michael Bevan as one of the greatest match finishers
“It was either between Mark Waugh or Matthew Hayden, but I had to go for Mark. Dean Jones was way ahead of his time, like running between the wickets,” Warne said while justifying his choice.
“Michael Bevan was one of the all-time greatest match finishers, Symonds was a destructive player, he could bowl as well,” he added.
Amid the middle-order, Warne slotted Australian legend Allan Border and also named him as the skipper of his all-time ODI XI team. To finish things off, Warne did not pick any specialist spinners in his ODI side. Instead, Warne went with the trio of Brett Lee, Craig McDermott and Glenn McGrath. The fast-bowling trio possessed the potential of uprooting any batting force when the three bowlers were in their prime.
Warne himself played a pivotal role in Australia’s success in the limited-overs format. In an illustrious career with the white ball, the leg-spinner scalped 293 wickets in 194 One-day Internationals at an impressive economy of 4.25.
