Australia were left heartbroken and stunned after Ben Stokes single-handedly won England the third Ashes Test at Headingley. He added an unbeaten 76-run stand with Jack Leach for the last wicket to take his team home in a thrilling game. Not that Australia didn’t have their moments during this partnership. They had got a chance each to dismiss both the batsmen and they botched up both.

When England needed around 40-odd runs to win, Stokes had wafted a wide delivery which went in the air towards the boundary. Marcus Harris ran towards the ball and did well to get hold of it. But the red cherry popped out of his hands after he fell on the ground. Later, when the hosts needed only two runs to win, Stokes hit a reverse sweep which went straight to the fielder.

However, for some reason, Jack Leach thought there was a single available and reached almost at the striker’s end. At the same time, Pat Cummins fielded the ball and threw it to Nathan Lyon to affect an easy run-out. But the off-spinner couldn’t collect the ball cleanly and fluffed a great chance to secure the Ashes.

No wonder, Lyon was distraught after the missed opportunity and to make things worse, the former England cricketer Matt Prior took a dig at him and advised the cricketer to sleep well after the loss.

Let’s enjoy the Ashes, says Warne

However, this tweet from Prior didn’t go down well with Shane Warne. He felt the former England wicket-keeper’s behaviour was pretty immature and also recalled how Lyon troubled him during his playing days. Warne also suggested Prior to not make such ‘stupid’ comments and enjoy the beauty of Test cricket and the Ashes.

Prior, however, reminded him that Lyon had, in 2017, commented that Australia will finish careers of England players and his same statement had come back to hit him.

The banter got serious from here on as a club cricketer from England Chris Adams got involved in it to support Matt Prior when the latter tweeted that the Aussies are good in giving but not that great in taking it. Shane Warne was furious at Adams as well stating that no one cares about his opinion as he’s just a club cricketer. Chris Adams too responded to Warne’s tweet in a witty manner.

Moreover, the 49-year-old also wrote a long tweet later mentioning that everyone should celebrate Test cricket and Ben Stokes. He also felt that there is no need to make such comments while also terming Matt Prior and Chris Adams’ action childish and immature.

The things are heating up off the field between the former players and there is no doubt that the fourth Test match at the Old Trafford will be another one of those Ashes classic.
