Former Australia spinner Shane Warne could not resist taking a sly dig at Kevin Pietersen after Sri Lanka stunned England in the World Cup clash on Friday. Sri Lanka stunned the entire cricketing fraternity by pulling off one of the most thrilling wins in the history of the World Cup. High-flying England, who had won four of their first fives in the competition, were the favourites to beat Sri Lanka in Leeds.
However, they put up one of their best performances in recent times to register an impressive 20-run win. In a low-scoring thriller, Sri Lanka’s bowlers led by the veteran Lasith Malinga held their nerves to steer their team over the line. Batting first, Sri Lanka managed just a modest total of 232 for 9. In reply, England ended 20 runs short when Mark Wood edged Nuwan Pradeep through to Kusal Perera to spark scenes of Sri Lankan joy.
The Lankans started the proceedings with the bat on a poor note and lost both their openers for just 3 runs on the board. However, handy knocks from Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis and an unbeaten 85 from Angelo Mathews gave them something to bowl at. Well, the score turned out to be more than enough in the end as the likes of Lasith Malinga and Dhananjaya de Silva steered Sri Lanka to a famous win.
The likes of Ben Stokes and Joe Root threatened to take the game away from Sri Lanka but their bowlers managed to keep the formidable English batting lineup under check. Malinga finished the game with 4 wickets while Dhananjaya picked up three.
Shane Warne takes dig at Pietersen:
Following the game, Shane Warne did not waste time in reminding Kevin Pietersen about his cricket team’s poor performance. The legendary spinner called India and Australia the favourites, writing: “Awesome mate, well done ! He can bowl ???? Now, what about your cricket team ? Another hiccup for England or ??? Mmmmmm ! Aussies & India gone to favourites now I reckon !”
