With Tim Paine failing to impress as the skipper, legendary Australian spinner Shane Warne feels Aaron Finch should take over the reins in all the three formats of the game for the Kangaroos. The 31-year-old right-hand batsman is already Australia’s T20 captain and is likely to take over as the ODI skipper as well from Paine in the home series against South Africa next month.
Finch has served as Australia’s captain in the ODIs twice in the past and was also Paine’s deputy in that forgetful five-match series in England earlier this year which the Aussies lost 0-5. Finch led Australia to a 7-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi recently and will take on Pakistan in a three-T20I series starting October 24. Earlier, Australia lost a two-Test series against the Asian side 0-1 under the captaincy of Paine.
Finch made his Test debut vs Pakistan recently
Warne, the second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 708 scalps, has even spoken in favour of picking Finch as the captain in Tests, especially after he made a decent debut in the just-concluded series against Pakistan. The Victorian made his Test debut seven years after playing his first international game and averages over 45 in two matches with one fifty.
“To me, he (Finch) should be captain. I’d like to see him captain all forms for the game,” Warne told the Herald Sun.
“His one-day and T20 cricket is outstanding and if he can seize his opportunity in the Test team, I believe he has a lot to offer in red-ball cricket. He’s a must pick and captaincy is a crucial element of the World Cup. I think he could do a great job and I like his captaincy style.”
Finch has played 93 ODIs and 43 T20Is so far, scoring almost 5,000 runs and has 13 international hundreds. He slammed 172 against Zimbabwe in a T20I in a tri-series in the African nation in July and it remains the highest individual score in the shortest format, bettering his own 156 scored against England in 2013.
Warne also had a slice of advice for Paine saying the latter should bat higher up the batting order.
