Australian all-rounder Shane Watson may have retired from international cricket but continues to topple the opposition at the domestic level. The star all-rounder struck the highest ever score by any Sutherland batsman in Sydney Premier Cricket history. The knock came against local rivals St George.

Records broken by Watson

In what was a swashbuckling inning of 184 runs from just 151 balls, ‘Watto’ as he’s called, smashed 14 boundaries and 11 maximums as he seemed to be on a rampage mode. He surpassed Nor O’Neill’s 168 which was the previous highest score, way back in 1965 in the club’s first match.

The 36-year-old veteran broke another record with opener Jarryd Biviano. Both put up a spectacular 300-run partnership after Sutherland were one down, which was again a club record for the second wicket partnership. The previous record was held by Nic Maddinson and Matt Hughston who combined for a 285-run alliance during the victorious semi-final against Eastern Suburbs in 2009-10.

Match proceedings

After being asked to bat first by St George, Sutherland didn’t have a great start as skipper Chris Williams was dismissed cheaply. That’s when Watson and Biviano got together and batted for 49.3 overs. Both the batsmen took the St George bowlers to the cleaners.

Trent Copeland was the pick amongst the bowlers as he had impressive figures of 4/97 from just 29 overs. However, that didn’t seal the deal for St George as Sutherland went on to declare their innings on 427/9 while St George even lost a wicket before stumps.

Elsewhere in the tournament

Charlie Stobo from the New South Wales had stupendous figures of 6/74 to restrict the Western Suburbs to 241. Gordon finished the day at 71/2.

Meanwhile, in Queensland, Bulls batsmen Charlie Humphrey and Bryce Street combined for a 129-run partnership to propel Sandgate-Redcliffe’s total to 371/8 against Toombul. While Humphrey scored an outstanding ton, Street slammed 94 runs.
