Shane Watson is one of the greatest all-rounders the world has ever since. He was a stalwart for Australia, especially in the limited-overs formats. He is explosive with the bat and his heavy balls as a fast bowler are good enough to rattle the best batsman in the business. He played for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 Indian Premier League and was arguably one of their stand out players.
The Queensland-born cricketer smacked a superlative century in the Final versus the Sunrisers Hyderabad and helped CSK win their third title. The hamstring injury was a major concern for the veteran, however, Watson didn’t allow them to affect his performance on the cricket pitch. Recently, he attended a show Quick Heal Bhajji Blast with CSK where he reminisced about the times when he started playing the sport.
“I just wanted to be the best”- Shane Watson
“My dad is a huge cricket fan, especially Test cricket. My dad never forced me to play cricket, but it was hard not to get caught up in his love of the game. I grew up in Ipswich, which is about 45 minutes west of Brisbane. Cricket was always my favourite and was always the sport I was most naturally good at,” Watson mentioned during the chat.
He also talked about his inspirations as his cricketing career shaped up. “I just wanted to be the best at both. I wanted to be the best fast bowler and wanted to be Craig McDermott, who was from Ipswich as well. I wanted to be him. Then I wanted to be Mark Waugh which then changed to be Ricky Ponting when he started playing as well,” the 36-year-old added.
Watson played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs and 58 T20Is for Australia and tasted a significant amount of success. He has over 10,000 runs in all formats, which aren’t mean numbers by any means. To add to his stupendous record as a batsman, he also has 291 international wickets. The experienced campaigner also has been featuring regularly in overseas domestic T20 leagues.
