Former Pakistani opener Sharjeel Khan, who is currently suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board for his involvement in spot-fixing in the Pakistan Super League, will now rely on the verdict passed on by the disciplinary committee of Bangladesh Cricket Board on Mohammad Ashraful.
It is learnt from sources in Dhaka that Sharjeel’s lawyer by the name of Shaigan Ijaz sent a letter to the BCB appealing to share the details of the circumstances which led to the reduction of the ban on Mohammad Ashraful for his alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the 2013 edition of Bangladesh Premier League.
On June 2014, the Bangladesh Cricket Board found him guilty and banned him for eight years but reduced to five years (with two years suspended) later on. In August 2016 Ashraful’s ban was partially lifted, allowing him to play in domestic cricket in Bangladesh. He will become eligible to play in international fixtures in 2018.
While speaking to Kashmir Times, Sharjeel Khan’s lawyer Shaigan Ijaz confirmed the move by claiming, “the circumstances in the case of Ashraful may be different but we have asked for more details”.
Khalid Latif, Jamshed and Irfan were also summoned by PCB
“If Ashraful’s details are not shared by the BCB, will request his London-based lawyer (Yasin Patel)”, further added Shaigan Ijaz. Sharjeel’s appeal against the ban will be heard by an independent adjudicator on Thursday.
“In our first hearing, we already had the preliminary arguments. The PCB’s lawyers were also present and Sharjeel Khan also appeared. Tomorrow is the next date (26-10-2017) of hearing. Sharjeel is in Karachi. He may arrive (in Lahore) late-night to-day or early morning tomorrow to remain present” concluded the lawyer.
Along with the swashbuckling southpaw, Khalid Latif, Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Irfan were also summoned by PCB for involvement in spot-fixing during the 2017 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
