Sharjeel Khan is one of the 5 Pakistani cricketers who were accused of spot-fixing in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League. The Pakistan Cricket Board, on Friday, showed proof against Sharjeel for his involvement in the PSL corruption issue to the three-man tribunal in charge of the case. However, Sharjeel’s lawyer dismissed PCB’s evidence as insufficient to declare him guilty.

“They have presented the evidences to the tribunal that contain statements of witnesses and some recording of interviews they had done during the investigations,” Ijaz said. “I want to insist to my media friends that everybody is innocent until or unless proven guilty.”

He further went on to say that Sharjeel is a very important cricketer to the national team, and to declare a player of his stature as guilty without solid proof would not be tolerated.

“Sharjeel Khan is our national asset and our national team player and until the matter is in proceeding and until things are not proved, he is innocent. We will assess the evidence in detail but we understand that these are insufficient.”

Both Sharjeel and his lawyer were handed over the report which finds him guilty, and are expected to respond to it before May 5. Another player from the fixing scandal, Khalid Latif, was also handed over the report against his charges and he too is expected to respond by the same date.

Both the players allegedly breached PSL’s Anti-Corruption Code. They were provisionally suspended from the tournament after the opening game.

However, it seems that the PCB wants to leave no stone unturned to punish the guilty. Several Pakistani veterans opined that the only way to eradicate this menace would be to put a lifetime ban on the guilty. It will be interesting to see what Khan and his lawyer respond to the material report.
