Shikhar Dhawan is not in his best of nick in international cricket for some time now. He hasn’t scored a fifty since January 26 and his lean patch ahead of the World Cup starting in May is being seen as a worry by experts. However, the 33-year-old southpaw has the Indian Premier League (IPL) coming up to return among the runs and his new franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) is also hoping for the same. Dhawan returned to his home-based franchise this year from Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange of three players, including Vijay Shankar, who came up with a match-winning performance against Australia in the ODI in Nagpur earlier this week.
Senior DC spinner Amit Mishra recently opined that Dhawan will be a key man for the team in the upcoming edition even if it has some impressive names in its ranks. With over 4,000 runs in 143 matches, Dhawan has a sea of experience in the IPL and is rightly expected as a player who can see the Capitals turning on the tables in quest of their maiden title. On Thursday, DC posted on Twitter a video of Dhawan answering a series of questions of rapid fire.
Dhawan spoke on a plethora of issues during the interview – from his favourite bowler to his favourite places to hang out in Delhi. When asked about his favourite bowler of all time, ‘Gabbar’, as Dhawan is popularly called, said: “I like Shoaib Akhtar a lot.” The two players though didn’t play much of cricket together as Akhtar played his final international match just months after Dhawan made his debut. He played against Akhtar in one of the IPL editions when he last appeared for the former Delhi Daredevils which was before making international debut. Also, in these times of high emotions, Dhawan’s pick restored faith on cricket camaraderie.
‘Gabbar’ fears no particular bowler
When asked about the bowlers he feared most, Dhawan did not take any particular name and said that it depended on which bowler was troubling him on a given day. Last November, the DC announced proudly the return of Dhawan to their ranks and that they traded three players in Shahbaz Nadeem and Abhishek Sharma besides Vijay for the dashing southpaw.
The DC will kick off their campaign in IPL 2019 against three-time champions Mumbai Indians led by Rohit Sharma at the Wankhede Stadium on March 24. The Delhi side has promising players in Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant besides the hard-hitting captain in Iyer and the presence of Dhawan will certainly boost their chances in the upcoming tournament.
