Pacer Shivam Mavi claimed a brilliant hat-trick in his List-A debut for Uttar Pradesh, finishing with figures of 5-73 in a high scoring match. The game took place during the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy on September 19 in Delhi between Suresh Raina-led Uttar Pradesh and Saurashtra. Mavi managed to bag the final three wickets of the innings in the final over, thus registering his hat-trick. Shivam Mavi has been very impressive with his pace as well as his ability to use the long handle.
However, his bowling is certainly his strength, and he made a telling impact in this year’s U-19 World Cup in New Zealand. Based on his performance for the U-19s, Shivam Mavi was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2018 edition of the IPL, where he was once again impressive with his raw pace. His teammate from India U-19 Kamlesh Nagarkoti also found himself with Mavi in the KKR setup. Nagarkoti is known to break the 150kph barrier comfortably, but he was ruled out of the IPL with an injury.
Mavi’s rise
Mavi, who hails from Noida in Uttar Pradesh, made his List A debut for India A against South Africa. He then went on to announce himself in style on the opening day of the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy in September 2018 with his hat-trick. Interestingly, all three batsmen who fell victim to Mavi in the hat-trick were bowled. The speedster was expensive, but he finished with the best figures in the match.
In reply, Uttar Pradesh came close to the target of 304 set by Saurashtra, but weren’t able to cross the finish line. Akshdeep Nath top-scored for UP with 62, with the rest of the batsman getting to 20s and 30s. Skipper Suresh Raina also managed to score just 22 in the chase. Mavi himself scored three boundaries in his knock of 22 from 15 deliveries, but UP eventually lost the match by 25 runs.
