Shoaib Malik ran three just by hitting the ball to mid-off
Malik came forward and tapped the ball down to scamper for a single.
Comedy of errors has been a common phenomenon on the cricket pitch. It mostly occurs due to the lack of awareness of the cricketers. One such incident took place in the 2018 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill in Florida when Jamaica Tallawahs and Guyana Amazon Warriors locked horns.
After winning the toss, the visiting team got themselves off a blistering start courtesy of Shoaib Malik and Shimron Hetmyer’s attacking style of play. In the first 8.2 overs, they went hell for leather and plundered 92 runs at a run rate of 11.04. They lost Chadwick Walton and Luke Ronchi for single-digit scores, but that didn’t stop Malik and Hetmyer from playing freely.
Tallawahs’ sloppy work in the outfield
The Tallawahs were psychologically shaken to some extent by the onslaught. Oshane Thomas bowled the ninth over and in the very first ball, Hetmyer deposited him over long on. In the third delivery, the fielders made a mockery of themselves. Thomas churned out a back-of-a-length delivery. Malik came forward and tapped the ball down to mid off to scamper for a single.
The fielder hit the stumps, but Shoaib Malik had reached the non-striker’s end by then. The ball ricocheted and went into the outfield. The batters sensed the opportunity and quickly took a second run. They also took off for the third run, but a strong throw to the keeper stopped them. However, the ball smacked the stumps and went behind and the batsmen embarked for the third run.
What should only have been a single, ended up being three runs. Thomas was expectantly disappointed and he shook his head in utter disbelief. The fast bowler ended up giving away 14 runs in the over. Jamaica eventually conceded 209 runs and lost the encounter by a significant margin of 71 runs. Moreover, they were dethroned from the top of the table.
