Shreyas Iyer could be a future leader for India: Brad Hogg
Iyer made his IPL comeback recently after missing out the first leg due to shoulder injury.
Shreyas Iyer has been a regular part of team India in white-ball cricket. He fetched in some impressive performances in the home white-ball series against England and before that in IPL 2020. This has made his selection in the upcoming T20 World Cup quite expected. But he didn’t make it to the main squad.
Iyer injured himself whilst fielding in the ODI series against England. He then underwent a shoulder injury owing to which he missed some international assignments and the first half of the IPL as well. This also affected his T20 World Cup selection as he was not included in the main squad but was named as a travelling reserve.
The former Australia spinner Brad Hogg is, however, impressed with the way Iyer has carried himself so far. Hogg shed light on all these aspects and pinned his hopes on the batter to lead India in the future.
“He has come back from injury, he is under a lot of pressure, and he did not get picked in the main T20 squad for India. The one thing that I saw in the press conference was that I’m thinking this guy could be a future leader for India,” Hogg said on his YouTube channel.
Shreyas Iyer does not get too far ahead of himself: Brad Hogg
As Iyer missed the Indian leg of the IPL due to the shoulder injury, Rishabh Pant was handed the captaincy of Delhi. Iyer, however, returned fit for the UAE leg of the IPL. He also anchored the innings of the team against Hyderabad and led the team to victory alongside Pant. Hogg thus praised the routine and process of Iyer.
“It was just the way that he went about the processes with his own game. He does not get too far ahead of himself. He’s got his routines and processes that he goes through and he does not go away from that.”
Delhi capitals earlier announced that they will continue Pant as the skipper for the remainder of the IPL 2021. Hogg said Iyer knows his role well and seemed to have no problem with the team’s decision and that this is one of the reasons behind the team’s success.
“That’s why Delhi Capitals have been at the top of the ladder, because of players like Iyer, who know their role in the team, being a team man and not being upset that Pant is continuing the captaincy role after he had it previously. He puts his team first,” Hogg said.
