Young Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer was rewarded with his maiden ODI call up when the Indian team was announced for the limited overs fixtures against Sri Lanka. Iyer was named as the replacement of Virat Kohli, who was rested from the ODI series. His inclusion in the national side has certainly pleased his colleagues at the domestic side, Mumbai.
Sameer Dighe, the coach of the Mumbai team, recently remarked that Shreyas Iyer thoroughly deserves to be a part of the Indian team. As per the quotes in Mid Day, Dighe believes that the mental strength of Iyer will help him flourish at the highest level. He added that Shreyas deserves this call up totally as he has been a consistent run getter in the domestic circuit. He hopes that Iyer will make the most out of the big opportunity that has come his way.
“Shreyas is a key player in the Indian Premier League and is capable of getting runs everywhere. He looks very mature now too. His mental strength will help handle the high pressure of international cricket,” quoted Sameer Dighe.
“I’m very pleased for Shreyas. He is getting the opportunity to play for the country because he has scored runs consistently. He is a brilliant fielder and good timer of the ball — a fabulous all-round cricketer. It’s a big opportunity and he is more than capable of handling it well,” he added.
Getting the captain’s support
Shreyas Iyer has played under the captaincy of Aditya Tare in the Mumbai team in the domestic circuit. He has flourished under the captaincy of Tare. Also, Tare has always backed his players, and Shreyas is no exception either. He also expressed his happiness on Shreyas’ inclusion in the Indian side.
“I am very happy for Shreyas because he’s getting into the Indian team. He deserves it,” quoted Shreyas Iyer.
