Shreyas Iyer might have gone away from the prospects of playing India but the man has been too busy with India’s domestic circuits. The hard-hitting batsman played his last game for India (he has featured in six ODIs and as many T20Is) in February 2018 but in the recently held Indian Premier League (IPL), Shreyas gave an impressive captaincy to Delhi Capitals. The franchise made the playoffs after a gap of seven years under his captaincy and narrowly missed the chance of playing in the final as they lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the second qualifier.
Besides his cricketing skills, Shreyas is also known for his active participation on social media platforms like Instagram where he gives trendy updates. The 24-year-old also conducts regular interaction with fans. And recently, the cricketer posted something unique: gulping down a fire paan!
Posting a video of a street paan-seller pushing a fire paan into his mouth, Shreyas captioned it: “The worst pan ever..Which made me speechless”. He was accompanied with a few friends while undertaking the experiment and when they asked him about the taste of the fire paan which is a burning clove-stuffed betel leaf, his gesture gave an impression that he didn’t like it too much.
Shreyas, who has two international half-centuries, impressed with his IPL captaincy which was thrust upon him last year after an out-of-form Gautam Gambhir lost the job. His team featured a lot of youngsters like Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw and Kagiso Rabada and under the tutelage of sharp cricketing minds like Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly, they ended up among the top three teams with 18 points – equal with Mumbai Indians and CSK.
However, the Capitals were forced to play the eliminator since they had a poorer net run-rate compared to Mumbai and Chennai but beat Sunrisers Hyderabad to get a match closer to their first-ever final.
Shreyas did well with bat and captaincy in IPL 2019
The Mumbai cricketer ended up with 463 runs from 16 matches with three fifties and average of 30.86 and strike rate of 120 in IPL 2019 and led from the front. He though was not picked up in the Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup but will lead India ‘A’ for the tour of the West Indies starting July. The tour features five ODIs and three four-day matches.
