Shreyas Iyer’s name has been making the rounds in the Indian domestic cricketing circles for quite some time now. In spite of having performed consistently over a considerable period of time, Iyer has been unable to cut through to the ranks of the national team. However, the youngster is unwilling to get agitated over the issue and only aims at performing for his country in whichever way possible.

Earlier this year, playing for India A, Iyer slammed a double ton against Australia. In spite of having raked up staggering runs in the Ranji Trophy over the last few seasons, the 22-year old has not been able to earn a spot in the national side. The only time that he donned the Indian jersey was when he was drafted into the side almost hastily at the last minute for the Dharamshala Test against Australia.

Aims at enjoying cricket

Iyer has been chosen to lead the Board President’s XI against the New Zealand side in the warm-up games, ahead of the touted series. When asked if he will be looking to utilise the game to impress selectors, Iyer said, “As I told you before, my job is to keep performing. I won’t be thinking what the selectors are thinking. When you have runs backing you up, you can go in with full confidence,: When you get a good start again in a new game, you want to ensure that you convert them into big scores. But whatever runs I have scored is past now. Tomorrow is a new day and I am looking forward to it.

“When you get a good start again in a new game, you want to ensure that you convert them into big scores. But whatever runs I have scored is past now. Tomorrow is a new day and I am looking forward to it.  We youngsters treat this game as an opportunity for us. We will try to give our best,” he added.

He side-stepped the question of whether he was disappointed about not being drafted into the national team. “No, I am tired of this question, to be honest. I wouldn’t like to reply at all. I think I have given all my answers previously. Again and again, I don’t want to talk over it,” Iyer said.

His love for the game is what drives him to keep doing better. “My motivation is enjoying cricket, and that’s what I do. I love playing cricket. It’s my passion. I love to score in every match, and that’s what my aim is every time I go to the ground,” he concluded while talking on the eve of the first game against New Zealand.
