Shubman Gill fined 100 percent match fee for showing dissent against Delhi

India batsman Shubman Gill has been fined 100 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent against umpire in Ranji encounter between Punjab and Delhi, last Friday. The incident had taken place at the very start of the match when Shubman Gill was batting on only 10. He was adjudged caught-behind by slow-medium bowler Subodh Bhati.

However, the youngster, who usually looks calm and composed, refused to walk off the field. Not only that, but he also decided to walk up to the umpire and vent his frustration. Reports suggested that Gill had also abused the umpire who was making his debut in the Ranji Trophy. And to everyone’s utter surprise, the umpire overturned the decision and thus the batsman was reinstated.

But Delhi players were not at all impressed with the umpire’s decision and their captain Nitish Rana also walked up to the official to question the decision. With things getting out of hands, the match referee had to intervene to bring the matter under control. Finally, after an interruption that lasted nearly 10 minutes, the play resumed.

Gill, nonetheless, did not make most of the reprieve as he edged one off Simarjeet Singh to Anuj Rawat for 23 off 41 balls with the team’s score on 60. The match, on the other hand, ended in a draw with Delhi taking the first-innings lead.

Delhi team’s statement on Shubman Gill:

Delhi team manager Vivek Khurana shed light on the incident, lifting the lid on how the events unfolded during the game. He also denied that the players were planning to walk out of the field after the match officials reinstated Shubman Gill.

“The straight umpire (Mohammed Rafi) had adjudged Shubman caught behind and the batsman then walked up to the umpire and was seen having an argument asking him to reverse his decision. The straight umpire then consulted the square-leg umpire (Paschim Pathak) and reversed his decision,” Vivek Khurana was quoted as saying by News18.

“Our skipper (Nitish) Rana just asked the umpires as to why they overturned the initial decision. We never walked out. The match referee (Ranganathan) came in and play resumed as usual,” Khurana added.
