India suffered a 1-2 loss to the South African side in the three-match Test series between the two sides. And, amidst the talks of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane not scoring runs, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh feels that Mayank Agarwal did not make use of the opportunity provided to him at the top of the order.
Harbhajan Singh also added that the likes of Prithvi Shaw or Shubman Gill might be picked for India’s next Test assignment against Sri Lanka after Agarwal’s failure.
Adding that Agarwal is a good player, the 41-year-old Harbhajan stated that the Indian opener has not scored enough runs with the willow in hand.
“Mayank Agarwal got six innings but he didn’t make use of the opportunity, which is a sign that some new player might come. Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw can be seen in the next series because six innings is more than enough for a player. Mayank is a good player whom I support but since he hasn’t scored enough so I don’t know what will be the way forward from here,” said Harbhajan Singh while speaking on his YouTube channel.
The door is open for Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh also added that veteran batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have not scored enough runs and the way ahead might be difficult for both of them. Singh concluded by stating that the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer are waiting in the wings as well.
“Rahane and Pujara played 50-run knocks in Johannesburg but expectations from seniors are much higher than this. They haven’t scored enough runs and I personally feel the way ahead from here will be difficult for them.
Players like Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer are waiting for their opportunity and I feel the way Rahane and Pujara performed they have actually opened the doors for Iyer and Suryakumar,” concluded Harbhajan Singh.
India’s next Test series will be against the Sri Lankan side and will commence on 25th February 2022.
