'Shut up, stand and bat' - Virat Kohli, Jonny Bairstow involved in heated exchange at Edgbaston

There seemed to be a lot of tension in the morning session of the third day of the rescheduled fifth Test match between England and India at Edgbaston with Virat Kohli and Jonny Bairstow having a go at each other on the field.

Kohli and Bairstow were seen having an argument on the field and after a certain point, the umpires had no choice but to intervene and ensure that the situation did not escalate. While a frustrated Bairstow after being done with the argument signaled Kohli to keep on blabbering, the batting megastar was also seen putting the index finger on his lips asking the former to stay quiet.

The heated exchange took place after the first ball of the 32nd over, which was bowled by senior pacer Mohammed Shami. “Shut up. Just stand and bat,” Kohli can be heard.

Meanwhile, Kohli was seen putting his hands on the shoulders of the Englishman saying something pleasant when players of both teams were heading back to the dressing room during a forced rain break yesterday.

While it was difficult to make out what the duo was talking back then, what really stood out in that scenario is that both were seen smiling and seemed in a friendly mood. However, on the third day, things changed as an irate Bairstow was seen saying something to Kohli after a fist bump with skipper Ben Stokes.

“Dont know, don’t know what happened there. There is something between Bairstow and Kohli. Definitely, Bairstow said something, Kohli’s gone back. It’s tense out there”, said Nasser Hussain from the commentary box. Later, Kohli was seen speaking to Stokes before giving a friendly punch on Bairstow’s shoulder to ease things out.

As far as the on-field action is concerned, Jonny Bairstow is the one-man army for England at the moment having registered a brave half-century and single-handedly keeping their chances alive. He was involved in a 66-run stand for the sixth wicket with Stokes before the latter’s dismissal for 25.
