Siddarth Kaul believes there's no better story than the rise of cricket in Afghanistan
Back in March this year, Afghanistan qualified for next year's World Cup in England and Wales.
The meteoric rise of cricket in Afghanistan has captured the imaginations of the cricket fanatics. They played their maiden ODI against Scotland in 2009 under the leadership of Nawroz Mangal. In 2010, they played the ICC World T20 in the West Indies. A couple of years later, they also participated in the World T20 in Sri Lanka in which Mangal and Co gave the likes of India a run for their money.
In 2015, the Asian team played their maiden 50-overs World Cup in Down Under and thrashed Scotland during the tournament to register their first ever victory in the event. Back in March this year, they qualified for next year’s World Cup in England and Wales. They also won the qualifiers in Zimbabwe by beating the Windies in the final at Harare Sports Club.
Afghanistan’s dream run
Meanwhile, they kept producing some prodigious talents over the years, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi are two of them. Both are stalwarts in the team’s lineup and have churned out a number of match-winning performances for them. Last year, the duo was drafted in by the Sunrisers Hyderabad to play in the cash-rich IPL. Subsequently, they became the first players from the nation to take part in the championship.
While playing in the event, a number of Indian players including the likes of Siddarth Kaul had the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with the experienced campaigners. Kaul, who made his international debut in India’s ongoing tour of the United Kingdom, hailed Afghanistan cricket and the team’s players for their stupendous run ever since they forayed among the big boys of cricket.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Have always said and believed that there is no better story for cricket in 21st century than the rise of Afghanistan cricket. @rashidkhan_19 bhai is one fine example and now @MohammadNabi007 bhai is ranked 2nd best ODI all-rounder. Congratulations brother. Rise and Shine”
