At the start of his career, Kieron Pollard was known for his explosive batting but later on went on to prove his mettle as an all-rounder by providing vital breakthroughs with the ball in hand along with his electrifying fielding performances, especially at the boundary. Pollard has been effective as a player as well by being a part of many successful franchisees across the globe and also being a key member of the West Indies squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2012
Meanwhile, it has been reported there are some people in the Caribbean who want the power-hitter as well as the head coach Phil Simmons to be axed due to underwhelming performances in the recent past. The criticism supposedly has come at a time after Pollard had just led the Windies to a 3-2 win over England in the home T20I series. But the team lost to Ireland in a three-match ODI series before.
However, Cricket West Indies (CWI) President Ricky Skerritt has said made it clear that there are no reasons to change the coach and captain anytime soon.
CWI chief says there will not be any change in coach and captain anytime soon
“Phil and Pollard have a few, but loud, critics who want them gone for non-cricket reasons. I have no reason to believe there will be any change in coach and captain any time soon. But remember the captaincy is evaluated as is the coach. If the system says these guys are not right people, we will deal with it.
“At the moment I don’t see anything coming at me that says these guys must go. Caribbean people like to take people down”, said Ricky Skerritt as quoted by Cricbuzz. Kieron Pollard has been the West Indies limited-overs skipper for quite a while and even though the two-time winners failed to defend their title in the T20 World Cup 2021, their recent T20I series win at home against the top-ranked England side would certainly boost their morale.
The middle-order batter would next be seen in action when he leads the Caribbean team against India in an away white-ball bilateral series starting February 6. Both teams will be playing three ODIs and as many T20Is. While the One Day series will be held at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata will be hosting the T20I series.
