Punjabi singer turned actor Ammy Virk has been roped in to play the role of Indian bowler Balwinder Singh Sandhu in Kabir Khan’s sports drama ’83. The makers of the film announced the news by sharing a post on social media on Wednesday, “Punjabi star Ammy Virk is all set to play Balwinder Singh Sandhu, the man who changed the game in the ’83 World Cup final,” read the caption of the post.
Featuring Ranveer Singh in the lead role the movie will be about India’s historic World Cup win in England in 1983 under the leadership of great Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev. The Men in Blue defeated the two times champions West Indies in the final by 43 runs and thus lifting the prestigious trophy at the iconic Lords Cricket Ground.
The film marks the debut of the 26-year-old actor in Bollywood who took to his Twitter handle to announce the big news and wrote, “Sat Shri Akaal. Thanks everyone for so much love… I am going to make my Bollywood debut. Shukar waheguru ji da…” In his post, the Qismat singer tagged the films’ director Kabir Khan and film’s lead actor Ranveer Singh and added, “Thank you so much.”

Ammy Virk has starred in hit Punjabi films like Angrej, Laung Laachi, and Qismat, the last of which was named after one of his most popular songs. The 62-year-old Balwinder Singh Sandhu played a clinical role in India’s victory over the mighty West Indies in the final by picking up two wickets including the all-important wicket of dangerous Gordon Greenidge. The Mumbai born bowler also scored crucial eleven runs coming in at Number 11.
The movie which sees Ranveer Singh playing the role of Indian Captain Kapil Dev was initially scheduled to be released in 2019. However, due to some issues, the movie is expected to hit the theaters on April 10, 2020.
