Sixth edition of TNPL set to take place from June 23 to July 31, two new venues to be introduced

The sixth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is scheduled to be held from June 23 to July 31 and the tournament will feature 28 league matches alongside four playoff games. As many as eight teams will take part in the round-robin format and each team will get to play seven games. The top four teams on the points table automatically qualify for the playoffs and Chepauk Super Gillies will start as the defending champions after winning the previous edition.

So, far only three venues namely the  ICL – Sankar Nagar Ground in Tirunelveli, Chepauk stadium in Chennai and NPR Cricket College Ground in Dindigul have hosted the TNPL games. However, two new venues – the SNR College Ground in Coimbatore and the Salem Cricket Foundation in Salem have been added. The tournament starts off with the Chepauk Super Gillies taking on the Nellai Royal Kings at the ICL ground in Tirunelveli.

In a statement, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association stated it hopes to bring back fans into the stadium for the TNPL taking into account the government restrictions. This will be a great opportunity for the youngsters to showcase their talent and a lot of players have made it to the IPL and the Indian team through the tournament.

“We sincerely hope to see the return of fans to the stadiums during the sixth edition of TNPL, however, based on the situation and government guidelines, we shall take a decision closer to the event,” TNCA said as quoted by Sportstar.

Sai Sudharsan was among the young cricketers who excelled in the previous edition of TNPL and he was picked up by the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022 mega auction subsequently. He managed to play only two games in this edition scoring a 30-ball 35, and a 9-ball 11. The other notable talents coming through TNPL are T Natarajan, Varun Chakaravarthy, Washington Sundar, Shahrukh Khan and no wonder, Tamil Nadu has been magnificent in the last three to four seasons in the limited-overs domestic tournaments.
