Bangladesh scripted history at the P Sara Oval in Colombo by defeating hosts Sri Lanka by 4 wickets in the 2nd Test today. Courtesy their impressive victory, the 2 match series has been shared 1-1. Earlier in the day Bangladesh bowled out Sri Lanka for 319 and was set a competitive target of 191 to chase down in the final innings. Bangladesh eventually chased down the target in the 58th over with 4 wickets in hand.
Beginning the final day on 268/8, Sri Lanka added some crucial runs in the opening session to stretch their lead towards the 200 runs mark. Suranga Lakmal struck two consecutive boundaries of Mustafizur Rahman in the 103rd over to get the lead past the 150 mark. The duo of Dilruwan Perera and Suranga Lakmal also completed their 50 runs stand in the following over as runs kept coming thick and fast for the hosts.
The partnership was finally broken in the 113th over when a lapse in concentration from Perera cost him dearly as he was run out by Mehedi Hasan moments after completing his half-century. The final wicket fell in the very next over as Sri Lanka was bundled out for 319, thus setting Bangladesh a competitive 191 to chase in their 2nd innings.
Bangladesh got off to the worst possible start losing opener Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes in quick succession. Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath provided the hosts with the first breakthrough when he foxed Soumya Sarkar with a flatter trajectory delivery. He set him up perfectly with two flighted deliveries and fired in the quicker delivery. Sarkar was half way down the track and managed to top edge it straight to the long-off fielder running in.
Herath added another in a matter of minutes when he bamboozled Imrul Kayes with a straighter delivery. The southpaw played for the non-existent spin and edged it to the slip fielder. Meanwhile, Tamim Iqbal looked solid in the middle and along with Sabbir Rahman the duo looked to steady the ship and take Bangladesh towards safety.
Herath was smashed for a couple of boundaries by Tamim and Sabbir which got them over the 50 runs mark. The duo looked in complete control as Tamim completed his half-century in the 27th over as Bangladesh scored quickly. The southpaw then launched a brutal attack on left-arm chinaman bowler smashing him for a four and six in the 30th over which brought up the 100 runs mark for Bangladesh.
Tamim was finally dismissed by Dilruwan Perera after the southpaw made a brilliant 82. Tamim stepped down the track to deposit it over the boundary ropes. It didn’t happen and he mistimed it straight up in the air. Dinesh Chandimal pulled off a sensational catch which opened the floodgates for Sri Lanka to claw their way back into the match.
Sabbir Rahman who was there at the other end too fellshortlyy after scoring a well constructed 41. The two most experienced players of Bangladesh Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim was out there to bail Bangladesh out of the precarious situation. After a 20 runs partnership, Shakib fell to Dilruwan Perera. Mosaddek Hossain joined Rahim in the middle and when he was dismissed Bangladesh was just two runs away from the victory target.
The visitors eventually reached the target in the 58th over handing them a famous win by 4 wickets. This is also Bangladesh’s first Test victory in an away fixture apart from Zimbabwe and West Indies. While Tamim Iqbal bagged the Man of the Match for his exploits in the 2nd Test, Shakib was adjudged the Man of the series for his exceptional all-round performance in the short series.
