Sri Lanka Cricket has been making constrained efforts to fix up their team issues. According to reports, it has been revealed that legendary former cricketers Kumar Sangakkara, Aravinda de Silva, Mahela Jayawardene and Anura Tennakoon have been roped in to form a five-member committee assigned to work on the rehabilitation of Sri Lankan cricket.
Though the prime understanding behind the decision hasn’t been disclosed, one of the reasons pointed out has been the fitness issues. In the current tour against Pakistan, top players like Kusal Perera, Asela Gunaratne and Angelo Mathews haven’t taken the field due to injuries.
The committee members
De Silva remarked that constant injuries to key players had been hurting the islander’s prospects and that department needed to be handled.
“One issue to look at in the short-term is the frequency of injuries,” he was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “Whenever we have a good run of form, we get injuries to key players. We need to look at the research and try and gain a better understanding of why this is happening and how we can better handle it.”
Former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene has been highly critical of the current situation of Sri Lanka’s domestic structure and it remains to be seen if this point appears advancing ahead in the matter. He hoped that all this discussion doesn’t go over the top and adequate measures are taken to sort it out.
“We are not part of Sri Lanka Cricket,” Jayawardene said. “It’s up to them to implement these plans and we hope they do, because if not all these meetings would just be a waste of time. I’m willing to put in one final effort to help cricket in the country, but it’s up to the board to make it happen. We can’t just keep coming back over and over again, as some sort of band-aid solution, he added.
There’s still suspense over the exact issues that will be addressed. As of now, the committee has highlighted on getting the short-term concerns fixed. Earlier, the Sri Lankan Sports Minister promised that their suggestions would be taken seriously by SLC.
