SLC cancels U19 series against Pakistan after Easter blasts
The decision was taken by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
Over 250 people were killed and around 500 injured in Sri Lanka following bombings at eight places across the country on Easter Sunday. The terror shook not only the country but also the entire world as Sri Lanka suffered the biggest scale of life loss in ten years, since the civil war. Things haven’t gotten any better in the country as it’s still on high alert.
Not only has the nation been marked on the no-go list of places, but also all kinds of tours have also been banned. According to the most recent reports, the dead bodies of 15 people including six children were found following an explosion at a suspected Islamist militant shelter in the eastern part of Sri Lanka.
The Pakistan U-19 team, led by Rohail Nazir, was scheduled to reach Sri Lanka April 30, at Colombo. The first game was supposed to be carried out on May 3 in Galle. The Pakistan squad had also been training at a conditioning camp in Karachi over the week. The tour consisted of two four-day games and three one-day fixtures, across in Galle and Hambantota.
However, with the current situation of unrest in the country, the series can be considered cancelled. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has however been constantly observing the condition in Sri Lanka, and are open to having the tour in the future when things are better in the host country. The blasts bring back the memory of the Christchurch mosques shooting from March 2019 following which the touring Bangladesh team had to flee from New Zealand.
The U-19 tour has been postponed indefinitely
No wonder, all kinds of cricket fixtures have been called off, and now the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has confirmed that the Under-19 series against Pakistan has also been “postponed indefinitely”. According to ESPNCricinfo, an SLC official said, “The tour has been postponed indefinitely. It was a decision taken by SLC, as we didn’t want to take any chances.”
