Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene lashed out at the home teams for their poor run and said Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) must not award a contract to the players, who are not interested to play. Dr. Maheem Jayasekera, who quoted the sports physician Professor Arjuna de Silva, told the media: “Why this game is protecting players well now.”

Recently, when a fan asked the same question to Mahela, he replied that this is not only the responsibility of the players but also the administrators, and also mentioned the fact that non-skilled players should not be awarded a central contract by the board. “All are at fault. players and decision makers. Players who don’t do the work should not be given contracts” he wrote.

Sri Lanka looked spineless

The Sri Lankan team lost the 3-Test match series to India and suffered a whitewash in their own backyard. They look hapless and XI members appeared to be on the field without any strategy. Indian opener made merry of the lack of quality in the Sri Lankan attack and scored runs at will. Shikhar Dhawan piled up two centuries in the Test series and already registered one in the 1st ODI between the two sides.

Apart from Dhawan, opener KL Rahul also scored consistently. All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who made his debut in the recently concluded Tests series, was termed as the find of the tour by captain Virat Kohli, as he scored a 70 in his debut game and made the most of the opportunity by registering his maiden century during the 3rd Test match.

Sri Lanka looked totally out of sorts so far, and even in the 1st ODI, the visitors have intimidated by their bowlers in the same fashion. It will now be interesting to see if the Lankan boys are able to make a comeback in the 5-match ODI series under the captaincy of Upul Tharanga.
