Sri Lankan cricket is at a low they have never seen since their rise in the 1996 World Cup; given the state of their cricket as well as the governance former captain Arjuna Ranatunga called for the resignation of President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Thilanga Sumathipala. Ranatunga, the Minister of Petroleum in the central government blamed the SLC President for the team’s poor show.
He had even written to both the country’s President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that they should intervene to put Sri Lanka’s cricketing fortunes back in order. He demanded the immediate sacking of the Sumathipala administration and the appointment of an interim committee to run SLC.
Sumathipala, who is the current Deputy Speaker in the national parliament, was elected to head the SLC in 2016 after a long reign by politically appointed interim committees. Sumathipala said his administration has laid long-term plans to resurrect the country’s cricket but it will take 3-4 more years to yield results. However, on the contrary, Ranatunga claims that Sumathipala’s administration is responsible for dwindling cricketing fortunes, which saw Sri Lanka slide down in all three ICC rankings.
The lady did not have a clean track record
To calm all the agitation, Sumathipala has been trying everything to keep his loyalists on his side, and in a recent development, it’s now been known that he has been involved in a shady recruitment of a secretary. In his bid to keep everyone happy, Sumathipala recently appointed a lady secretary to K. Mathivanan, the vice-president of SLC and domestic cricket head.
The reason why the news comes as a shock is because the lady used to work in a Sri Lankan airline in the past, but the management fired her when she found guilty of smuggling drugs. Despite having such a track record, Sumathipala appointed her as the secretary to K. Mathivanan.
This is not the only time he has been involved in such a controversy. Previously, Thilanga was spotted sending an underworld guy to England for the cricket World Cup, who died mysteriously.
