‘Small mistakes have a big effect’- Sanjay Manjrekar on Dinesh Karthik denying Krunal Pandya the single
Manjrekar also lauded Karthik for his power-hitting.
After a defeat in the opening game at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, India made a stupendous comeback in the second encounter at the Eden Park in Auckland. Subsequently, they also drew level in the series. Unfortunately, the Men in Blue couldn’t hold on to their winning momentum and slumped to a four-run defeat in the third game at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.
Subsequently, the visitors also conceded the three-match T20I series 2-1 to Kane Williamson’s Kiwis. Rohit Sharma’s men were chasing 213 and needed to score 48 runs in the last three overs. The onus was on Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya to take the team over the finishing line. Both batters didn’t die wondering and went after the Black Caps’ bowlers with all their might.
Manjrekar expresses his displeasure
Having scored 14 runs in the penultimate over by Scott Kuggelejin, India needed 16 runs off the last over bowled by the very experienced Tim Southee. At that point in time, Karthik and Krunal were batting on 24 and 25 respectively. In the first two balls of the over, the right-handed Karthik could only muster a couple of runs. In the third ball, Karthik lofted the cherry to long on.
To everyone’s surprise, he didn’t take the single and decided to finish the encounter all by himself. In the next ball, he couldn’t time the leather to perfection and this time around, he took the single and also smashed his bat on to his pads in frustration. Dinesh spanked a six off the last ball, but that wasn’t going to be enough to take India to a series victory.
In the meantime, the cricketer turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar reckons that Karthik did a mistake by not taking the single and that error turned the game on its head. The former Indian cricketer took to Twitter and wrote, “Brilliant hitting by DK but small mistakes have a big effect on the result in T20s. Was a mistake to not take that single with Krunal at the other end,”
