Left-handed batswoman Smriti Mandhana was amongst the top run-getters for the Indian team in the recently concluded World Cup. The 21-year-old created quite a stir within the cricketing fraternity after her two brilliant knocks during the side’s campaign in England. Her innings of 90 in the opening match against the hosts was top notch, followed by a century against West Indies in the group stage.
Mandhana’s batting has now been compared to the likes of ex-India captain Sourav Ganguly. While critics drew conclusions comparing her style and technique with that of Ganguly, she revealed in an interview that she draws her inspiration from Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara. Humbled by her statement, the legend also lauded her.
“I also admire Ganguly, but it is Sangakkara that I relate to. I haven’t really watched Ganguly bat a lot in my young days, whereas, Sangakkara has been an inspiration,” Mandhana had said. “Whenever I feel that I am not batting the way I should, I watch videos of Kumar Sangakkara. I like his batting style.”
Sanga is humbled
When mentioned about the same to the legendary wicketkeeper, Sangakkara stated: “Please convey to Smriti my thanks for mentioning my name. I was humbled to have been mentioned by such a wonderful player as she is,” he was quoted by Sportstar.
Delighted to hear it, Smriti replied saying, “Please thank him on my behalf.”
