Smriti Mandhana loses her No.1 ODI ranking to New Zealand's Amy Satterthwaite
The pace bowler Shikhar Pandey has broken into the top ten.
The recently concluded South Africa Women tour of India saw some pulsating cricket action. Despite the inclement weather marred the T20I leg of the tour, the Women in Blue notched up an impressive 3-1 series win. And followed it up with another clinical display in the succeeding three ODIs. Though the team’s points have increased, Smriti Mandhana has lost her numero uno spot in the latest ICC rankings.
The Mithali Raj-led side inflicted a 3-0 whitewash on the visitors. And, the most heartening fact about the win- apart from the scoreline, obviously- is how the team reacted to adversity in each of three encounters. Whether it was defending a lowly target of 147 in the last game or it was chasing down the highest total in their cricket history (248) in the second, every time Team India needed someone to put their hand up, they found a new hero.
Apart from all these adversaries that the Women in Blue successfully encountered, the biggest of them actually came even before a ball was bowled in the ODI series when batting spearhead Smriti Mandhana was ruled out due to injury. The left-hander, who is currently running against time in a bid to get fully fit for the upcoming West Indies tour, has now been dealt with another blow.
Smriti Mandhana loses important rating points
The injured opener has now proceeded to lose her top spot as far as ICC rankings for the batters in One-Day International cricket. The southpaw has lost her No.1 position to White Ferns’ skipper Amy Satterthwaite after she missed out playing the ODI series against South Africa.
Smriti Mandhana has 755 points and has now been pipped by Satterthwaite (759 points) despite the latter being on maternity leave. Among other batters, Mithali Raj moved to the seventh spot while T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who played a vital match-winning knock to seal India’s highest run-chase has risen to the 17th position.
As far as the bowling is concerned, spinner Deepti Sharma has moved down to the third place while Shikha Pandey has broken into the top-ten.
