Ace Indian batswoman Smriti Mandhana, who on Sunday, July 29, registered her name as the joint fastest scorer (18 balls) of a half century in Women T20s, shared a photo of her with former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara on Monday, July 30.

Mandhana equalled the three-year-old record of New Zealand’s Sophie Devine in a rain-shortened game against for the Western Storm against Loughborough Lightning in the Kia Super League in England. She hit five fours and four sixes in her 19-ball 52 not out to help her side bag an 18-run win. Incidentally, Devine partnered her as the opener for the Lightning side in this game and scored 46 off 21 balls though couldn’t see her side through.

Sangakkara, who watched Mandhana bat, applauded her knock to say in his Twitter post: “Watching @mandhana_smriti putting bowlers to the sword here at Taunton. She is brilliant to watch. Great ambassador and great skill.”

“This just made my day. A big fan girl moment for me. Can’t express how glad and overwhelmed I am. This memory is going to stay with me forever,” the 22-year-old southpaw said in the caption accompanying the photo.

The 40-year-old former Sri Lankan captain who led his team to the final of the 2011 ICC World Cup, is busy with his commentating duty in England at the moment. He will be a participant in the commentary box in the about-to-begin Test series between India and England.

The former cricketer, one of the best the island-nation has produced in its cricketing history, joined Sky Sports as a full-time commentator after hanging up his boots from county cricket last September. He has been one of the most prolific scorers in modern-day cricket, amassing 12,400 runs in 134 Tests and 14,234 runs in 404 ODIs to finish as the second highest run-getter in international cricket.

Earlier this year, Sangakkara joined former greats like David Gower, Allan Lamb and Sir Vivian Richards to support a new opportunity for fans to own a part of the Lord’s Cricket Ground, known to be the sport’s Mecca.
