1st sign of transfer fees in cricket like football: Vaughan on reports of MI buying Hardik
Michael Vaughan reacts to Hardik Pandya saga
The cricketer-turned-commentator Michael Vaughan reacted to the reports of Hardik Pandya moving back to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. The former England captain also mentioned that it was the first sign of transfer fees in cricket like in football.
ESPNCricinfo reported that Mumbai Indians are poised to strike a landmark deal with Gujarat Titans involving Pandya. The proposed all-cash transaction, estimated at INR 15 crore ($1.8 million approx.), encompasses his salary alongside an undisclosed transfer fee to Gujarat Titans, where he may also claim up to half of the transfer amount. This potential trade has stirred speculation, indicating a monumental shift in the IPL landscape.
As per reports, to secure Hardik's return, Mumbai Indians might release Jofra Archer and Cameron Green, previously signed for substantial amounts of INR 8 crore and INR 17.5 crore, respectively. This strategic move underlines their intent to bring back their former player and bolster their roster. However, reports also suggest that insiders at Gujarat Titans have hinted at their reluctance to part ways with the 30-year-old, emphasising his pivotal role in their recent successes.
No official update on Hardik’s Mumbai homecoming
Despite the murmurs, both franchises have maintained a silence, neither confirming nor denying the ongoing negotiations. Comparisons have been drawn to football's extravagant transfer culture, where substantial sums are exchanged for acquiring top-tier talent. This trend might soon become commonplace in the IPL as wealthy franchise owners vie for star players to build championship-worthy teams.
The Indian all-rounder's journey in the IPL has been noteworthy, starting with Mumbai Indians in 2015 and contributing significantly to their four title triumphs. His departure from Mumbai in 2022 led him to Gujarat Titans, where he assumed the captaincy and guided them to a title in their inaugural season. Titans emerged as runners-up in the subsequent season, facing defeat against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
