'Let's not confuse T20Is with IPL' - Aakash Chopra opens up on Ishan Kishan's subpar show in T20Is

Ishan Kishan has scored heavily whenever he has got a chance to play in ODI cricket but that isn't the case in T20Is.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan made his Test debut against the West Indies and scored his maiden half-century in the second Test. He followed this up with three consecutive fifties in the three-match ODI series against Shai Hope's men. However, his returns were underwhelming in the first couple of T20Is in the five-match series and he was subsequently dropped ahead of the third game.

Ishan averages 46.27 in ODI cricket and has a strike rate of 107.43. However, in T20Is, he has a paltry average of 24.50 and a strike rate of 121.63. His numbers in the Indian Premier League, however, are decent as he averages 29.42 and has a strike rate of 134.26. Aakash Chopra explained how the IPL is different from T20Is and also mentioned Suryakumar Yadav's failure to replicate T20 heroics in the ODI format.

"Suryakumar Yadav is not the only one who is stuck. Ishan Kishan has also had difficulties. He has scored a double century in ODI cricket as an opener but he hasn't fired in T20Is. Let's not confuse T20Is with the IPL," Aakash said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"In the IPL, you have a long season of 14 matches, if you bat at the top of the order and are an important player, like Ishan Kishan is for the Mumbai Indians, your place is secured and you keep on playing in one way. You know that there are a lot of matches. So you find your rhythm at some stage. However, when you play T20Is, one series comes in three months. If you don't start well in that series, suddenly you start thinking because the number of matches is limited and your place is not yet fully secured, someone or the other is waiting behind you."

'You tend to forget what your template was' - Aakash Chopra believes that Ishan Kishan wasn't playing his natural game in T20Is

Ishan Kishan could only manage scores of 6 and 27 in the two T20Is he played against West Indies. He scored those runs in nine and 23 balls, respectively. The former India opener noted that the 25-year-old played within himself in the two matches.

"If someone is waiting and there is pressure on you, sometimes you tend to forget what your template was. If you see the current series, he played only two matches, he has more than 50% dot balls. Ishan Kishan didn't use to play so many dot balls," Aakash concluded.
