The coveted ICC (International Cricket Council) mega cricket carnival, Champions Trophy 2025 kicked off with the hosts Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener on Wednesday, February 19, in Karachi. Skipper Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and decided to bowl first

The Green Shirts are often known for having a strong bowling attack and they showcased the same in the first game with the dismissal of the opener, Devon Conway. Notably, the New Zealander became the first batter to get dismissed in the marquee event. Speaking of the Black Caps, they started with the Conway-Will Young duo, who began cautiously and were looking good to provide a solid start for the opening wicket. However, after leg spinner Abrar Ahmed was brought into the attack, soon after the willy spinner got the host a much-needed breakthrough.

Conway failed to pick the carrom ball of Abrar which crashed into his off stump. In the end, the left-handed batter was dismissed for 10 runs while playing for the turn, but the ball just went past him to disturb the timber. Interestingly, after taking the wicket, the bowler came up with a unique celebration which seemingly indicated that he was mocking Devon Conway for not being able to pick his variation at all.

Williamson failed to get going in Champions Trophy opener

Speaking of the game, after Devon Conway's departure,  it was Kiwi legend Kane Williamson who came to the crease at number three. Unfortunately, he failed to play the long and eventful innings he is known for. Pacer Naseem Shah claimed his wicket with a beautiful outswinger, which resulted in Williamson edging the ball through to the wicketkeeper while getting out cheaply for just one run.
