'Absolutely disgusting' - Fan blasts BCCI for unhygienic sanitary conditions at cricket venues
Shilpa Phadke took to Twitter in the early hours of Monday, February 20, highlighting the woeful state of the sanitation facilities at the premiere Indian venues.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is receiving backlash from fans after a series of tweets from an enraged spectator exposed the dire sanitary conditions of some of the renowned cricket stadiums in the country. Shilpa Phadke, who has been doing the rounds after her outburst against the BCCI, shed light on the unhygienic state of affairs at the stadiums after India's victory against Australia in Delhi.
Shilpa Phadke took to Twitter in the early hours of Monday, February 20, highlighting the woeful state of the sanitation facilities at the premiere Indian venues. She revealed her poor experience at the Wankhede and Firoz Shah Kotla stadium in the last 14 months, where she encountered faulty toilets, which painted an unsavoury picture in every cricket fan's mind.
"Hey, BCCI, Jay Shah- in the past 14 months, having been a cricket spectator in 2 of India's biggest cities, along with my young daughter; here's an experience we don't wish to encounter ever again: absolutely disgusting toilets in both venues, at Wankhede as well as at Kotla," one of her tweets read.
Talking about the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, Shilpa revealed that it was hard to find a women's toilet at the venue, and even after finding one, she had to instruct her eight-year-old daughter to refrain from drinking water due to the unhygienic condition of the toilet. Even though she found more toilets at Kotla, they were not up to the mark either.
The Indian fan urged the apex cricketing body to look into the matter as the country is set to host the 50-over World Cup later this year. She demanded respect for the female supporters who came to show their support for their teams.
"With India set to co-host the men's world cup later in 2023 will BCCI take up the challenge of changing your mindset before then? Construct functional toilets and hire agencies to manage them. It can be done right. I hope you will take this suggestion seriously. Thank you," she added.
