Anton Roux quits as Sri Lanka fielding coach

Anton Roux, who joined as Sri Lanka’s fielding coach in 2022, decided to resign from his position at the end of the week. He has played first-class cricket for South Africa and coached Netherlands before joining Sri Lanka. Under his guidance, the Sri Lankan team improved their fielding standards, which also helped them win the ODI World Cup qualifiers in 2023.

Announcing his decision, Roux stated that the ongoing week would be his last with the national team. He noted that it was an honour for him to be associated with the Sri Lankan team and added that it was a humbling experience that he will cherish for the memories forever.

“On the 14th of August 2024, I decided to step down from my role as the National Fielding Coach for Sri Lanka Cricket. This week will be my last with SLC as I finish my handover. It has been an immense honour and a truly humbling experience to serve the Sri Lankan national cricket team. I will forever cherish the memories and experiences that came with this journey,” wrote Roux in a post on his 'X' handle.

Notably, Anton Roux was appointed when Sri Lanka were going through turmoil. The country saw a massive financial crisis and immense political tension. However, the cricketers did well on the pitch, including home series win against Australia. He added that the electric atmosphere and the passion he saw in fans will forever be etched in his memory.

“Witnessing the resilience and unity of the Sri Lankan people during times of crisis, especially during the incredible series win against Australia on home soil, was a testament to what this nation, and team, can achieve when it comes together. The electric atmosphere, the passion of the fans, and the triumphs on the field will remain etched in my memory,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will next host New Zealand in a two-match Test series. After that, the team will travel to South Africa for a two-match Test series.
