Ashes 2023: Barmy Army takes subtle jibe at Virat Kohli, sends social media into frenzy
The incident occurred when Moeen Ali, who came out of his retirement for the Ashes, bowled his first ball of the contest.
In the midst of the first Test of the ongoing Ashes series, the Barmy Army took to their social media account to take a subtle dig at India star batter Virat Kohli. The incident came to light when Moeen Ali came out to bowl for the English side during the second innings of the high-octane clash.
The Barmy Army, which is seen supporting the Three Lions during their matches, has on numerous occasions come up with tongue-in-cheek responses on social media, which has often garnered quite a lot of attention. While the Aussies were receiving their share of banter during the first Test, intriguingly, former India skipper Kohli too became part of the banter, courtesy of a peculiar tweet posted by the Barmy Army.
The incident occurred when Moeen Ali, who came out of his retirement for the Ashes, bowled his first ball of the contest. On that note, the Barmy Army shared a GIF wherein Moeen can be seen drawing curtains on Kohli’s innings, getting him clean bowled.
“Mo (Moeen Ali) back with the red ball in hand,” captioned the Barmy Army.
While the tweet got many Indian fans infuriated, the English fans, however, appreciated the cheeky post on social media. Notably, the English cricketer called time on his Test career after playing his final red-ball match in September 2021.
However, after a two-year-long hiatus, the veteran cricketer decided to come out of retirement to help his side after England's first-choice spinner, Jack Leach, was confirmed to be ruled out of the series owing to a lower back stress fracture.
Speaking about the match, Moeen claimed two scalps for 124 runs in his 29 overs thus far at the close of Day 2. Meanwhile, after a bold declaration by the English side for 393 runs on Day 1, the Aussies have got 311 runs for the loss of five on the second day and will look to push through for a solid lead.
