Pakistan registered an important five-wicket win over India with a ball remaining.
Pakistan pulled off an important five-wicket win over India in the second match of Super Four of the 2022 Asia Cup. The in-form batter Virat Kohli smashed another big fifty to help India put a big 182-run target on the scoreboard while batting first. But opening Pakistani batter Mohammad Rizwan scored 71 runs off 51 balls to snatch a comeback win over their arch-rivals.
Babar Azam won the toss and invited India to bat first at Dubai International Stadium. India made three changes to their squad with Hardik Pandya coming in after absence in Hong Kong game and Ravi Bishnoi coming in for Avesh Khan. Deepak Hooda also walked in the XI for the all-important clash. For Pakistan, Mohammad Hasnain replaced injured pacer Shahnawaz Dahani.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started well by forming a 54-run partnership for the first wicket. Rohit started his innings by smashing a four and a six off Naseem Shah in the first over. But the Indian skipper failed to convert a good start into a big knock and got caught out on 28 runs off 16 balls. India put a record 62-run powerplay-score against Pakistan but lost KL Rahul on the first ball of the seventh over.
Kohli continued where he left off in the last match and looked aggressive from the start. Suryakumar Yadav also played some good shots to avoid further falls. But Mohammad Nawaz dismissed Suryakumar on 13 runs and Shadab Khan removed Rishabh Pant on 14 runs to put some pressure on India. But Kohli, looking back to his best, scored 60 runs off 44 balls to guide India to a big 181/7 total.
Indian bowlers continue to struggle in the 2022 Asia Cup
Ravi Bishnoi, playing first time in this tournament, dismissed Babar in the fourth over who continued to struggle for the big knocks. But in-form batter Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman formed a crucial 41-run partnership for the second wicket to remain in the chase of a big target. Chahal took the wicket of Fakhar in the ninth over who scored 15 runs off 18 balls.
But Mohammad Nawaz joined Rizwan to put another big partnership of 73 runs for the third wicket and put Pakistan in control of the match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Nawaz in the 16th over who smashed 42 runs off just 20 balls and Hardik removed Rizwan, who scored the highest 71 runs off 51 balls, to pull India back into the game.
But Khushdil Shah smashed unbeaten 14 runs off 11 balls and Asif Ali scored 16 runs off just eight balls to reach the target with five wickets and a ball remaining. India next face Sri Lanka on Tuesday and Pakistan clash against neighbours Afghanistan on Wednesday in the Super-Four Asia Cup fixtures.
