Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 21 runs in the Super Four stage clash.
Sri Lanka began their Super Four stage in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 against Bangladesh on September 8 at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and invited the hosts to bat first.
The Dasun Shanaka-led side got off to a solid start, in the first innings. While Sri Lanka attempted to exert authority over the game, Shoriful Islam brought Bangladesh back into the game with a twin scalp in consecutive overs, shattering the 50-plus stand between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. The wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed right after completing his half-century whereas the former was removed for 40(60).
Meanwhile, Sadeera Samarawickrama played a career-best 72-ball 93 runs as Sri Lanka set a 258-run target for the tourists. The 28-year-old came to bat at number four while the hosts were at 108 with the loss of two wickets. The youngster was instrumental for Sri Lanka in the last 10 overs as they scored 81 runs at that time. However, he was dismissed by Taskin Ahmed in the very last ball of the innings. Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud both claimed three-wicket hauls while Shoriful Islam took two for the Shakib Al Hasan-led side.
However, Towhid Hridoy led the charge for Bangladesh, amassing 82 off 97 deliveries, offering the team a sigh of relief. He also created a 72-run fifth wicket stand with Mushfiqur Rahim. However, the three-wicket hauls from Shanaka, Matheesha Pathirana, and Maheesh Theekshana allowed Sri Lanka to limit Bangladesh to 236 in 48.1 overs, resulting in a 21-run victory.
This marked the Bengal Tigers’ second consecutive defeat in the Super Four stage of the continental championship. Sri Lanka will next play India and co-hosts Pakistan in the Super Four stage. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will take on Rohit Sharma and Co. in their final clash.
