Hosts Australia are currently having a great time in the Boxing Day Test in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25), being played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Team India seemingly found themselves in a precarious situation as they were left reeling at 164/5 at stumps on Day 2. Notably, after winning the toss, Skipper Pat Cummins chose to bat first. This time the home side handed a "Boxing Day" Test debut to a young 19-year-old batting sensation, Sam Konstas. The debutant began astonishingly well by taking on India's premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
Now any young batter irrespective of the domestic cricket form, gets jitters while donning the Test kit and playing for the country for the first time. However, as per the Australia spin bowling stalwart, Nathan Lyon, things were rather on the flip side for the young Konstas. In a rather surprising conversation, Lyon revealed that before getting his debut 'baggy green' cap, during the warm-up, Konstas came over and sat beside the spinner and pacer Mitchell Starc, and darted a question which took them by surprise.
Lyon elaborated that the 19-year-old who had been in an ominous form in the domestic cricket circuit, came over moments before debut and asked the veteran duo about when he would get to feel nervousness like any other debutant. He did not just stop there. Konstas also added that he felt that the debut Test was just like going into another usual Grade level match in Australia. This brimming verdict and confidence left both the Australian stalwarts amazed.
“Sam Konstas came next to me and Starcy before the match and told us 'Lads, when do you reckon the nerves are going to kick in? This honestly just feels like a grade game,'" said Lyon in the viral video

Konstas impressed with sensational fifty on debut
Meanwhile, speaking of Sam Konstas, the youngster did not give out any nerves at all. The 19-year-old top-order batter counter-attacked the Indian bowlers with his fearless approach in the game and scooping and ramping Jasprit Bumrah for massive sixes. As a result, the dashing batter went on to score 60 runs aka half-century on his debut in just 65 balls to give Australia a solid start in Melbourne.
