Jason Roy who was excluded from England’s victorious T20 World Cup 2022 squad due to poor form looked to make a statement by getting some runs under his belt in the first ODI against arch-rivals Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, November 17.
However, Roy could not make any impact on his comeback as he was undone by an unplayable inswinger from Aussie pace spearhead Mitchell Starc which brought an abrupt end to his stay in the middle.
Mitchell Starc breaches Jason Roy’s defence
England were asked to bat first after Australian skipper Pat Cummins called it right at the toss. The visitors were off to a very cautious start before opener Phil Salt was dismissed in the fourth over for just 14 runs to his name. But, even his opening partner Roy could not hang around there for too long and followed soon.
On the second delivery of the fifth over, Starc bowled a brilliant inswinger which also happens to be the biggest weapon in his arsenal. As soon as the delivery was bowled, it left Jason Roy in two minds whether to attempt a shot or defend that ball.
Nonetheless, even before he could bring down his bat properly, the England opener’s timber was disturbed after the ball went through the gate. Starc and the Aussies started celebrating as Roy walked back to the pavilion for six runs against his name of a 11 deliveries.

The explosive opener's wicket put England in a spot of bother as they were reduced to 20/2. They went on to lose their top order very soon with the dismissals of James Vince and Sam Billings as the scorecard read 66/4 in the 14th over. The experienced white-ball duo of Dawid Malan and skipper Jos Buttler would now be hoping to steady the English ship and help them post a competitive total on the board.
